O’Neill Library Meeting Room

A meeting of the Holt County Republicans was held on Thursday, July 14, 2016, 7pm, at the O’Neill Public Library. The meeting was called to order by President Shirley Peterson. Grace Coleman gave the invocation and Barb Otto led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes of the County Convention were read but no action may be taken on these minutes until the next County Convention. Shirley Peterson noted one error: Instead of Grace Coleman working on the Web site, it should be Sheryl Cole. This correction will be addressed at the next County Convention.

The Treasurer’s report shows a balance of $1241.05. Shirley Peterson presented an invoice for $51.49 for the two magnetic signs to be used in parades and other Republican events. Barb Otto made a motion to reimburse Shirley for the signs, and Russ Barelman seconded the motion. Motion carried.

No Old Business came before the meeting.
New Business:

Bill Tielke and Norman Nielsen gave a report on the State Republican Convention. Norman Nielsen attended a pre-convention reception at TD Ameritrade which was sponsored by the Douglas Co. Republicans and Donald Trump. It was an opportunity to meet and visit with other delegates, Governor Ricketts, former Governor Heineman and other elected representatives. The day of the convention was filled with remarks from elected officials and party officers along with numerous votes to elect delegates to the National Convention and Central Committee members. The Resolutions and Constitutional Amendments Committee presented the Resolutions to be reviewed and either approved or not. A total of 14 resolutions were presented with 11 being adopted.

Fred Snowardt has agreed to take on public relations responsibilities for the Holt Co. GOP and published a press release after the County Convention. Shirley reported that she has found it extremely difficult to get information from the Nebraska Republican headquarters/staff. Shirley and Fred will continue trying to get relevant information to the public via Web, radio, newspaper, and telephone.

Bill Tielke spoke regarding Governor Rickett’s visit to O’Neill and stated there were about 60 people in attendance. The Governor urged voters to remember that they are voting for the Republican, not the individual.

Russ Barelman motioned and Grace Coleman seconded the motion to meet bimonthly with the flexibility to add meetings as needed and to travel to all the towns in Holt County for the meetings. The motion was amended to read: The Holt Co. Republicans will meet every other month unless we decide to add additional meetings and will travel to other towns in Holt County. Motion carried. The next meeting will be in September; time and place to be determined.

Becky Schmeichel motioned and Barb Otto seconded the motion to make a $20 donation to the O’Neill Public Library for the use of their meeting room. It was agreed to donate $1 from each attendee. Motion carried.

Grace Coleman reported the Nebraskans for Founders’ Values will conduct the Unicameral Prowess 101 Workshop on Saturday, July 16 at 2:30pm. Lt. Gov. Mike Foley will be the guest lecturer.

Shirley Peterson stated that the Holt Co. Republicans need to do a major fundraiser within the next two years with the hope of having the Governor attend. She also asked if members want speakers at the monthly county meetings (e.g. candidates for Unicameral, etc.). Bob Beelart contacted Shirley regarding a possible rally for Donald Trump that Charles Herbster is organizing for Sept. 9, 10 or 24th at Falls City, NE. The dinner prior to the rally would be $2500 per plate and tickets to the rally would be $25-50.00. Bob Beelart suggested getting a bus to take interested people to the rally. Shirley will keep members informed of further details as they become available. Becky Schmeichel would like to see the Holt Co. Repubicans do more to reach out to and get young people involved in the party. Shirley stated that the Holt Co. Fair booth would cost $25.00 and dates are August 4, 5 & 6. Booths are usually open from 10am to 5pm. The Nebraska Republican Party will also have a booth at the State Fair and are looking for volunteers to work in that booth.

Lois Schaffer made the motion and Russ Barelman seconded the motion to adjourn. Motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.
